Emerging Foods New Zealand

Emerging Foods New Zealand (EFNZ), formerly Emerging Proteins New Zealand is a community that seeks to accelerate the development of a thriving emerging foods sector in New Zealand. Our members span the sector from growing and producing food through to manufacturing, retailing and exporting it. Members are encouraged to share knowledge, get connected with the right expertise and facilities and work together on common projects.

Membership is open to individuals and organisations who are actively involved in any aspect of the emerging food supply chain or who are looking to establish or expand their operations into the emerging food space.

Emerging Foods New Zealand is inclusive and positive, encompassing a wide range of emerging food sources, including plant, fungi, insect, bacterial and cell-culture.

Established in July 2020, Emerging Foods New Zealand’s primary function is to connect and facilitate, both one-on-one and larger groups, including:

  • Quarterly ‘meetings’ (a combination of zoom and face-to-face where possible) with relevant speakers and Q&A sessions to expand the networks and share knowledge.
  • Access to the right experts and equipment, general advice, and introductions to potential collaborators.
  • Future collective projects involving multiple parties to tackle common issues and questions.

Please feel free to let us know if there is anything you can think of where we may be able to help.

Reports

Occasionally we will put out reports and thought leadership to help influence government policy, science investment and future markets.
Download them:

Unleashing Aotearoa New Zealand’s Next Protein Revolution.

The intention of this report is to help New Zealand accelerate its decision-making regarding how (or if) it chooses to take part in this rapidly moving novel agrifood sector.

Government Investment in Opportunities of Alternative Proteins.

This report provides a summary of what governments in ten countries are doing to support the development of their alternative proteins sectors, and use this information to evaluate their overall level of commitment and the key drivers behind this.

Emerging Proteins in Aotearoa New Zealand.

This report summarises key observations and opportunities arising from discussions with 185 people from throughout the emerging proteins sector.  It concludes with some recommendations for what is required for this sector to thrive, and some principles upon which we believe activity in this sector should be based.
